What is Motor neurone disease (MND)?
Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rare and progressive neurological disorder that affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. As the disease progresses, these nerve cells gradually deteriorate and eventually die, leading to muscle weakness, wasting, and paralysis.
In Australia, MND affects around 2,000 people at any given time, with an estimated 400 new cases diagnosed each year. The disease typically strikes people in their 50s and 60s, although it can affect people of all ages. Currently, there is no known cure for MND, and the cause of the disease is not fully understood.
Symptoms of MND can vary from person to person, but may include muscle weakness, twitching or cramping, difficulty with speech, swallowing or breathing, and eventual paralysis. While the disease progresses differently for each individual, it typically leads to death within three to five years of diagnosis.
Despite ongoing research, the cause of MND is still not fully understood. However, researchers believe that a combination of genetic and environmental factors may contribute to the development of the disease. There is currently no cure for MND, but there are treatments and therapies available that can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life for those living with the disease.
At present, there is no definitive test for MND, and diagnosis is often made through a combination of clinical examination, medical history, and other tests such as electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS).

We volunteered at the Big Freeze 8 in June 2022 - it was such an incredible exerpience and one we were so humbled to take part in. We will do anything to help find a cure for MND.
Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is the name given to a group of neurological diseases which the nerve cells (motor neurons) controlling the muscles fail to work and eventually die.
It affects the muscles that enable us to speak, swallow, move around and breath. With no nerves to activate the muscles they eventually weaken and waste. The average lifespan of a person suffering with MND is just 27 months.
FightMND has a purpose of finding effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Motor Neuron Disease. Fight MND also provides ongoing support and equipment to those effected.
